Strengthening health systems against a silent epidemic

by | Nov 18, 2025

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the world’s most pressing health threats – a silent epidemic that threatens to undermine decades of progress in medicine.

Each year, infections become harder to treat as bacteria evolve faster than available treatments.

The fight against AMR demands more than new antibiotics. It depends on strong, coordinated systems that ensure every laboratory has the right tools, in the right condition, at the right time – so that resistant infections can be detected early and contained before they spread.

Building the foundations for early detection

Behind every accurate test result is a dependable supply of essential laboratory equipment and materials.

From biosafety cabinets that keep staff safe, to incubators and autoclaves that support daily testing, to reagents and media that reveal resistance patterns – each item plays an essential role in identifying and tracking AMR.

Through the Partnership for Supply Chain (PFSCM) AMR product portfolio, PFSCM provides access to these critical technologies while ensuring quality, regulatory compliance, and long-term availability.

By ensuring laboratories have the tools and supplies needed to generate reliable test results, PFSCM helps strengthen the flow of AMR data into national surveillance systems – enabling ministries and health partners to monitor trends and design effective antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention strategies.

Partnership in action

PFSCM collaborates closely with governments, global health agencies, and donors to ensure that essential laboratory products are transported quickly, safely, and efficiently from suppliers to the final destination.

Our work extends beyond procurement: we collaborate with national partners to improve importation procedures, streamline customs clearance, and maintain strong cold chain systems – reducing delays and protecting sensitive health products.

In countries across Africa, including recent initiatives in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ethiopia –  these efforts have shortened clearance times, reduced product loss, and expanded access to short-shelf-life commodities critical for AMR surveillance.

Lessons from our work supporting genomic and diagnostic networks now guide our approach to strengthening AMR supply systems globally.

Reliable access to high-quality laboratory equipment and essential supplies is the foundation of every AMR response.

Strengthening systems, securing the future

Every step forward against AMR begins with access to diagnostics, data, and dependable supply systems.

Drawing on 20 years of global supply chain experience, PFSCM strengthens sourcing, logistics, and regulatory alignment to ensure reliable access to the tools laboratories need to detect resistance and protect public health.

When supply chains work, laboratories work, and when laboratories work, health systems grow stronger.
