What is mpox (formally known as monkeypox)?

Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease caused by infection with the mpox virus. It is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus. It is also transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding. The infection usually presents as rash and may often be associated with other symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle and backaches and swollen lymph nodes.

Understanding PCR testing

PCR (polymerase chain reaction), also known as nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), detects the genetic material (DNA or RNA) of the virus in clinical samples. By analyzing dry swab specimens collected from rashes or skin lesions, PCR tests identify the DNA of the mpox virus. This method amplifies small amounts of viral DNA until it is detectable, making it possible to identify even low concentrations of the virus in a sample.
In contrast, WHO emphasizes that serology and antigen detection methods can yield false positives from closely related viruses, making PCR the preferred testing method for accurate confirmation of mpox infections.
