At PFSCM, our mission is to empower countries to enhance their response capabilities against health emergencies like pandemics. The recent global outbreak of mpox, driven by the clade Ib strain, underscores the vital need for accurate and timely laboratory testing to disrupt transmission chains and halt the spread of the virus.
What is mpox (formally known as monkeypox)?
Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease caused by infection with the mpox virus. It is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus. It is also transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding. The infection usually presents as rash and may often be associated with other symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle and backaches and swollen lymph nodes.
The importance of supply chain management
Effective supply chain management is fundamental in the fight against mpox. A resilient and responsive supply chain ensures that affordable, quality essential health products reach affected areas swiftly and efficiently. By expanding supplier bases, ensuring rapid market access, securing stock, optimizing resource allocation, and enhancing the distribution of medical supplies, we can significantly improve outbreak responses and deliver critical interventions to impacted communities. In public health emergencies, a well-coordinated supply chain is not just beneficial—it is essential.
The role of laboratory testing
Accurate laboratory testing is paramount for diagnosing and confirming mpox infections. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing has emerged as the gold standard in this regard due to its high sensitivity and specificity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), PCR testing is recommended for the detection of the mpox virus because it can reliably distinguish it from other similar viruses, thus reducing the risk of false positives.
Timely identification of cases through reliable testing is crucial for implementing effective control measures.
Understanding PCR testing
PCR (polymerase chain reaction), also known as nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), detects the genetic material (DNA or RNA) of the virus in clinical samples. By analyzing dry swab specimens collected from rashes or skin lesions, PCR tests identify the DNA of the mpox virus. This method amplifies small amounts of viral DNA until it is detectable, making it possible to identify even low concentrations of the virus in a sample.
In contrast, WHO emphasizes that serology and antigen detection methods can yield false positives from closely related viruses, making PCR the preferred testing method for accurate confirmation of mpox infections.
Our commitment to global health
As a leader in global health, understanding the significance of PCR testing in responding to mpox outbreaks is crucial. Ensuring the rapid and sustained availability and efficient distribution of PCR testing kits and associated supplies, including the timely delivery and clearance of time- and temperature-sensitive products like reagents, is essential for effective outbreak management and curtailing further transmission of the virus. Many PCR reagents require cold chain storage to maintain their stability and effectiveness, making temperature control during transport vital for accurate test results.
In light of the rising mpox cases, collaboration among global health organizations is more important than ever. PFSCM is dedicated to supporting countries in strengthening their response measures and placing communities at the forefront of outbreak management. With our extensive experience, strategic partnerships, and in depth knowledge of supply chain logistics, we ensure prompt clearance of essential supplies at ports and maintain the integrity of cold chain products. By leveraging our expertise alongside expanding access to quality health products, we can make a meaningful impact in the global fight against mpox.
The advancement and accessibility of PCR testing are critical to managing mpox outbreaks. By applying our strengths in supply chain management to ensure timely access to accurate testing, PFSCM is committed to enhancing global health emergency responses. Together, we can make a significant difference in combating mpox and improving health outcomes worldwide.
